Pambu Panchangam (Snake Panchangam) gets its name from the snake illustration prominently featured on its cover โ a symbol of time and cyclical nature. It is the most widely used traditional Tamil panchangam, found in homes across Tamil Nadu and among Tamil diaspora worldwide. Pambu follows the ancient Vakya system โ the traditional calculation method based on Surya Siddhanta vakyas (astronomical formulas). Despite modern panchangams using more precise calculations, Pambu remains the emotional and cultural standard for most Tamil families, particularly for those who follow traditional customs and temple practices. Multiple publishers in the Thanjavur region publish their own versions of Pambu.

โ๏ธ Comparison: Pambu Panchangam vs HinduPlace (Swiss Ephemeris)
Both systems calculate the same panchang elements (tithi, nakshatra, etc.)
using the same traditional rules. The difference is only in how each system
determines the precise positions of the Sun and Moon.

Why do differences occur?
Pambu Panchangam uses Vakya Panchangam which Vakya Panchangam derives planetary positions from 'vakyas' โ Sanskrit sentences that encode astronomical cycles in a form easy to memorize and calculate manually. This system was dominant in South Ind...
HinduPlace uses Swiss Ephemeris DE441 (error margin: Less than 1 second for tithi/nakshatra end times).
For most days the values are identical. On days when tithi or nakshatra changes
near sunrise/sunset, the transition time may differ by 1-4 hours for planetary positions. Tithi may shift by 30-90 minutes..
